The Ichthyology division at the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum conducts research, research training, and undergraduate, graduate and public education on the world’s fishes. The research in the division is supported by our extensive collection of 680,000 fishes of 3,500 species from 85 countries including both freshwater and marine specimens. The collection is mainly comprised of wet specimens stored in ethanol, but also includes extensive skeletal and cleared and stained collections. It also has a world-class genetic tissue collection of over 11,000 individual tissue samples used in phylogenetic studies. The collection is almost completely digitized and available online through our web portal and numerous aggregators for research, education and public access.
